MANILA, Philippines — The bicameral conference committee gave its nod to the subscriber identity module (SIM) registration bill on Tuesday.

The panel deliberated on the disagreeing provisions of Senate Bill No. 1310 and House Bill No. 14, the chambers’ respective versions of the SIM registration bill.

“Bicam-approved na ang Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Act! Salamat po sa ating mga kapwa mambabatas sa pagsisikap para ito ay maipasa,” Senator Sherwin Gatchalian announced in a Twitter post.

The bicameral’s approval happened the same day the Senate passed the SIM registration bill on its third and final reading.

The House of Representatives, meanwhile, approved the measure last week.

The SIM registration bill seeks to eradicate crimes aided by SIM — such as scam text messages hounding mobile phone users — by requiring end-users to submit their personal information.

Both the Senate and House’s versions of the measure removed the social media provision, which was why former President Rodrigo Duterte vetoed the bill in the 18th Congress.
