MANILA, Philippines — A resolution honoring the heroism of five local rescuers who died saving victims of Typhoon Karding (international name: Noru) in Bulacan has been adopted at the Senate.

Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. sponsored the resolution during Tuesday’s Senate plenary session.

“We all share this deep sorrow and pain with the families and loved ones of our rescuers while exalting their sacrifice with a highest sense of great pride and profound gratitude. Habang ito ay isang malaking trahedya, ito rin ay huwaran ng kabayanihan,” Revilla said.

(While this is a big tragedy, this is also a role model of heroism.)

“Ipinamalas po nila sa buong mundo ang bukod-tanging katapangan ng mga Pilipino na walang inuurungan, na itinataya ang kanilang buhay para sa kapakanan ng iba. Ito ay magsisilbing inspirasyon para sa ating lahat,” he added.

(They showed the whole world the exceptional bravery of Filipinos who do not back out of anything, risking their lives for others. This will serve as an inspiration for us all.)

All members of the Senate were made co-authors of the resolution.

The five members of the Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office who lost their lives are George Agustin, Narciso Calayag Jr., Troy Justin Agustin, Jerson Resurreccion, and Marby Bartolome.

The local rescuers were found dead after they drowned while responding to flood-hit areas in San Miguel town.

To date, the Karding death toll is at eight. The three other fatalities were from Zambales and Quezon.
