1 dead, 1 hurt as van hits motorcycle in Quezon

LUCENA CITY—A helmetless motorcycle rider died, while his pillion rider was injured before midnight on Sunday, June 19, along the Maharlika Highway in Candelaria town in Quezon province.

The Quezon police reported on Monday that motorcyclist John Kelly Dagli, 23, was crossing the highway in Barangay Poblacion at 11:15 p.m. when a passing van driven by Bamba Buzar hit his vehicle.

Dagli suffered grave injuries and died on the spot. His back-rider, Via Delos Reyes, 22, was also injured and rushed to Candelaria District Hospital for treatment.

In a phone interview, Cpl. Michael Arellano, the case investigator, disclosed that both victims were not wearing crash helmets.

Wearing crash helmets for motorcycle riders is mandated under the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

The van driver remained under police custody and is facing criminal charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injury, and property damage.
