2 dead, 1 fighting for life after Quezon road crash

LUCENA CITY—Two motorcycle riders died in a road crash in Mulanay town, Quezon province early on Saturday (May 21), according to police.

Mulanay police identified them as John Keneth Deraya and John Kevent Macunat, who rode in the back. Both were residents of Mulanay.

Police said the victims’ motorcycle collided with a van driven by Argie Atibagos on a national road at a village in the town. The impact caused severe injuries to the motorcycle riders.

Deraya and Macunat died on the way to the Bondoc Peninsula District Hospital in neighboring Catanauan town.

A third person riding the motorcycle, Michael Fortaleza, is still undergoing treatment.

The report did not state whether the victims were wearing crash helmets, which is required by Republic Act No. 10054, or Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

Police said the motorcycle was trying to overtake another when it crashed into the van coming from the opposite direction. The van driver is in police custody.
