78 NPA rebels yield to cops in Mimaropa in 5 months

CITY OF CALAPAN –– Seventy-eight former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered to the police in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) from Jan. 1 to May 31, a report said Tuesday.

One of the rebels, “Ka Esmael,” 25, of Magsaysay town in Occidental Mindoro, surrendered at 3:30 p.m. on May 30 to the police at Camp Winston Sibley Ebersole in San Jose town through the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

Ka Esmael was a regular member of the Communist Party of Philippines-NPA (CPP-NPA) under the Komiteng Larangang Gerilya Mark Anthony Velasco (KLG MAV) of the Sub-Regional Military Area (SRMA-4D), a report said.

He is now under the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Occidental Mindoro for debriefing before enrollment in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

Police Brigadier General Sidney Sultan Hernia, Mimaropa police chief, lauded the surrender of “Ka Esmael.”

“I urge all remaining CTG (communist terrorist group) members to withdraw their support from the CPP-NDF-NPA. Through the programs of the NTF-ELCAC, the government guarantees benefits to all former rebels once they surrender,” said Hernia.
