Calapan City gets first female city mayor

CITY OF CALAPAN — Calapan now has its first female city mayor in businesswoman Malou Morillo after she was proclaimed by the city board of canvassers Tuesday morning.

Morillo was proclaimed the new city mayor at around 11:30 a.m. at the city hall.

She defeated incumbent Vice Mayor Gil Ramirez and lawyer Gilbert Repizo. Morillo garnered 36,452 votes while Ramirez got 29,824 votes and Repizo obtained 12,040 votes.

The total registered voters in the city were 100,921 while those who actually voted total 81,290 (80.54 percent turnout).

Morillo’s running mate Bim Ignacio was also proclaimed vice mayor after he garnered 36,772 votes over opponents lawyer Rap Infantado (25,207 votes) and incumbent councilor Mylene de Jesus (14,255 votes).

In 1998, Calapan was converted from a municipality into a component city.
