STOCKHOLM — A Supreme Court justice in Sweden has been fined for shoplifting ham, meatballs, and sausages, among other food items, a week before Christmas last year, the prosecutor in the case said on Thursday.
The 67-year-old woman was caught red-handed by staff at a grocery store in central Stockholm.
“I have issued a fine regarding the crime [of] petty theft, previously known as shoplifting,” chief public prosecutor Per Nichols said.
Denial
When reports emerged that she was being investigated, the judge resigned from her post in February — after having served two decades on the bench.
According to legal news outlet Dagens Juridik, she tried to hide the meats and cheese she stole in a woven bag, which she then stuffed into another bag.
The judge admitted to the facts but denied any intention to steal the groceries.
Nichols said she was issued a fine of 50,000 Swedish krona ($5,400, 4,800 euros).
