UP Mindanao joins calls for justice on death of alumna Christine Dacera

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Mindanao has joined the call in seeking justice for the death of its alumna, flight attendant Christine Angelica Dacera.

Dacera was found unconscious in a hotel bathtub in Makati City on New Year’s Day, and was later declared dead at the Makati Medical Center.

“The University of the Philippines Mindanao mourns the tragic loss of Christine Angelica Dacera. Along with our entire community, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved Dacera family,” UP Mindanao said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We, the UP Mindanao community, are one with her family and friends in calling for justice,” it added.

Dacera was a graduate of the BA Communication Arts program and was an active member of the University’s resident dance company, the Dance Ensemble.

UP Mindanao called on the authorities to investigate and “serve the justice she deserves.”

“It is high time to dismantle the macho-feudal system that perpetrates sexual violence. We call for accountability. We call for justice,” it said.

The Philippine National Police earlier said the case of Dacera is considered “solved” after the police were able to identify the suspects for her death.

The Makati City police has also filed before the prosecutor’s office a provisional charge of rape with homicide against 11 men for the Dacera’s death.

Three of the 11 men have already surfaced.

PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas warned eight of 11 men who were at the New Year party with Dacera to surrender in 72 hours or be hunted down.
