Navy officers have welcomed a new furry friend into their ranks after saving it from floodwaters in Tabasco, Mexico.

A team found the stranded animal while riding a boat past homes that were partially submerged in water. The Secretaría de Marina (Mexican Marine Secretariat) posted a video of the rescue on its Facebook page on Nov. 15.

The authorities spotted the dog standing on its hind legs in the floodwater while using its front paws to lean on a window frame. Once the boat neared the dog, an officer gently petted it before helping it get aboard the small boat.

Days after the rescue, officers of the organization revealed that they have welcomed the dog into their ranks since no one came to claim it. They also included clips of the animal sporting a navy uniform as it interacted with the team.

The military organization has also asked the public for suggestions on what to name their newest member. However, the submission for entries has already ended and they will soon be announcing the chosen name.

Tabasco and other areas in the southern region of Mexico were ravaged by Hurricane Eta and two cold fronts earlier this month. According to Mexico News Daily, the heavy rains caused the worst flooding the Mexican state has seen in 50 years.  /ra
