MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Sunday that it recorded 86 offshore earthquakes in Ilocos Sur from December 17 to 22.
Of this number, 61 were plotted and two were felt by residents at 5 p.m. Sunday, according to Phivolcs.
On Friday, the state seismologist said 49 earthquakes were recorded west-northwest of Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur, between December 17 and 20. These are now included in the 61 plotted earthquakes.
“The largest earthquake in the sequence occurred on 19 December 2024 at 09:09 (PST) with magnitude M5.0 and focal depth of 27 km,” Phivolcs noted in a Friday update.
Phivolcs said it would continue to monitor and tally earthquake activity in the area.
The Office of Civil Defense has also alerted local government units in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon to prepare their earthquake and tsunami evacuation plans following the series of offshore earthquakes in Ilocos Sur.
