MANILA, Philippines — After attending a Senate hearing, Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab on Thursday said he would also subject himself to quarantine amid the lingering 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) threat.

Ungab was with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio at the Senate Wednesday to attend the Commission on Appointments hearing for their confirmation as colonels of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Senators Sherwin Gatchalian and Nancy Binay earlier said they would undergo a 14-day quarantine after a resource person in the Senate tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“I was at the Senate with Mayor Sara yesterday and I interacted as well with Senator Sherwin Gatchalian,” Ungab said in a message to reporters.

“Although he (Gatchalian) looks very healthy and asymptomatic, the most responsible thing to do is to subject myself to home quarantine and make sure that I won’t be spreading the virus.”

Ungab said his constituents may reach him through “electronic communication such as phone, e-mails, telecon[ferencing] and videoconferencing.”

Duterte-Carpio earlier said she would also undergo self-quarantine after a member of her household staff was listed among patients under monitoring for the virus.

The Philippines has so far recorded 49 confirmed COVID-19 cases. On Wednesday night, a 67-year-old woman became the first Filipino to succumb to the illness.

COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, causes mild symptoms such as fever and cough for most people but can cause serious illness such as pneumonia for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.
