BREAKING: Coronavirus cases in PH soar to 49; 16 new patients recorded

Update

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has 16 additional cases of 2019 coronavirus disease or COVID-19, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 49, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday.

Health Undersecretary and Spokesperson Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire said they will continue surveillance over the infected patients.

“DOH is continuously monitoring the statuses of all patients to ensure that no complications arise throughout their recovery,” Vergeire said in a press conference at DOH main office.

Vergeire said of the 49, three are in critical condition while the remaining 46 are stable.

The coronavirus disease is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that was first recorded in China’s city of Wuhan in Hubei province in December 2019.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses identified the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus causes respiratory symptoms including fever and cough but it can cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia especially to older adults and people with existing health issues.

The coronavirus, a family of viruses, shows surfaces with a crown-like appearance. The viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.

Infected Filipinos overseas

The Health department also recorded a total of 96 patients tested positive for the disease, mostly crew members and passengers at the virus-hit cruise ship MV Diamond Princess.

Of the 96, 80 are from the quarantined cruise ship, two are from the United Arab Emirates, five are from Hong Kong, three are from Singapore, while six are from the Grand Princess cruise ship which was quarantined off the coast of California.

Of the 96, as many as 64 have already recovered and discharged from hospitals in their respective countries.
