MANILA, Philippines — While illegal firecrackers are a serious matter, the local government of Manila exchanged funny messages while warning the public about it on New Year’s Eve.

Manila Public Information Office (MPIO) on Tuesday shared on social media a clip of illegal firecrackers seized by the Manila Police District (MPD).

However, some would-be New Year revelers asked the MPIO if they could have some of the seized firecrackers, but the agency remained its ground on its campaign against the prohibited items.

“Pahingi ako [I want some],” one netizen wrote to which the MPIO replied, “Bawal [It’s banned].”

Another netizen chimed in saying “Kunat [stingy],” then the MPIO replied with a meme of a cat wearing sunglasses flashed with words “Deal with it.”

On Tuesday, at least two minors have sustained injuries caused by fireworks.

According to the Department of Health’s (DOH) fireworks-related injury surveillance, 14 injuries have already been recorded in Manila alone from December 21 to 31, 2019, the highest number of cases is in the National Capital Region.
