Pagasa: Storm surge likely in La Union, Pangasinan amid Typhoon Ramon
MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau warned Tuesday that storm surge may possibly happen in surge-prone areas of La Union and Pangasinan due to Typhoon Ramon.
According to the 2 p.m. weather update of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the possible storm surge in some areas of La Union and Pangasinan may likely reach up to two meters in height.
A storm surge, Pagasa explained, occurs when the sea rises due to winds and pressure changes associated with storms.
Ramon was last spotted some 120 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 165 kph, the state weather bureau noted.
The typhoon was also monitored as almost stationary even as it is expected to hit land either Tuesday afternoon or evening over the Babuyan Islands.
Pagasa maintains its Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TWCS) No. 3 over areas in Northern Cagayan, particularly in Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Sanchez Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros, Aparri, Calayan, Camalaniugan, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga, and Santa Ana.
