A man from Changsha, Hunan, in China was sentenced to two and a half years in jail after he dumped his 15-day-old son by the roadside back in 2017.
The man, identified as 46-year-old Kang Jinjian, left the infant at a roadside after his ex-wife delivered him despite his opposition to the birth, as per Xiaoxiang Morning Post via the South China Morning Post on Thursday, April 18. The boy was born in September 2017 and the incident occurred a month later in October 2017.
A search carried out by the family and authorities was not deemed successful as the infant boy had yet to be found. Kang was in good terms with his former wife, known only as Jiang, until 2017 when she decided to keep the baby boy.
The infant was the couple’s second child, as they already had an 11-year-old daughter together. As per the report, Kang opposed the pregnancy because it would put a strain on their finances.
“I couldn’t bear the thought of raising him,” Kang was quoted as saying. “I didn’t want to spend a penny on this child.”
Kang volunteered to bring the infant to the hospital with his mother-in-law for a check-up at the time, but left with the baby when the grandmother was in line. He apparently drove away and abandoned him on a roadside flower bed.
He was initially sentenced by a district court to three years in jail last October 2018, but this was reduced by six months by an intermediate court, as per the report. Kang’s wife divorced him less than a month after he abandoned their son. Cody Cepeda /ra
