TAIPEI?Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou was on Tuesday fined $15,500 (500,000 Taiwan dollars) by an election supervisory body for an election campaign violation, officials said.

Election officials in Ilan county said Ma broke the law on November 25 when he cited an opinion poll that placed his ruling party's candidate ahead in the upcoming vote.

Quoting polls in public is banned in the final ten days of a campaign.

"President Ma accepted the fine and decided to pay it himself," the ruling Kuomintang party spokesman Lee Chien-jung told reporters.
