CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—A man who was apprehended for traffic violations was also caught with an unlicensed firearm in Laguna Monday, a police official said.
Senior Superintendent Manolito Labador, Laguna police director, said in a text message that Matthew Francis Villanueva, 37, was flagged down at a police checkpoint in Barangay (Village) Sirang Lupa, Calamba City, in the first hour of Monday, for not wearing a helmet while driving his motorcycle.
But upon investigation, police recovered from him an unlicensed .22 pistol loaded with ammunition. Villanueva was also found to have an expired driver's license.
He is now detained at the Calamba City Police Office.
Meanwhile, police are encouraging gun holders to apply for licenses or renew expired permits as the national Gun Amnesty Program shall end on November 30.
