MANILA, Philippines -- Tropical depression “Gorio” maintained its strength Friday as it moved farther away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa said “Gorio” was 110 kilometers northwest of Laoag City in the northwest, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and moving northwest at 22 kilometers per hour.
Pagasa raised public storm signal No. 1 only for Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
The agency said it expected “Gorio” to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the western section of Luzon and Western Visayas.
As a result, extreme Northern Luzon, including Tuguegarao City and Laoag City, will experience rains with gusty winds. Coastal waters will be moderate to rough, Pagasa said.
The rest of the country, including Metro Manila, will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon and Western Visayas, the weather bureau said.
By Saturday morning, “Gorio” is expected to be 680 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes. So far, “Gorio” is the seventh weather disturbance to enter the country’s area of responsibility this year.
