DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Eleven Indonesians and two Taiwanese nationals were arrested for illegal entry and poaching off the waters of Talikod Island in the Island Garden City of Samal, authorities said Sunday.
The foreigners were on board the Indonesian-registered fishing boat F/V Karya Wijaya, when they were intercepted by the Philippine Coast Guard some 1.5 nautical miles off the island last Thursday, Davao City Coast Guard Commander Roy Echiverria said.
"They have no papers to show that they are authorized to do business in the Philippines," he said.
Illegal entry and poaching charges were filed against the suspects, who have been ordered to stay onboard their fishing vessel docked at the Sta. Ana Wharf here, Echiverria said.
Echeverria said the language barrier made it difficult for them to know why the fishing boat entered Philippine waters without authorization when it could have done so under the terms of the fishing cooperation pact of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East-Asia-Growth-Area (BIMP-EAGA) economic cooperation.
Authorities confiscated the 200 tuna fish that the group was carrying, Echeverria said.
The Indonesian consul office has come to the aid of the arrested foreigners, but they were referred to the courts, Echeverria said.
Echeverria said the arrested fishermen would face deportation proceedings following the resolution of their case in court.
In April 2007, another Indonesian fishing vessel was spotted within Philippine waters and near the island but authorities were not able to intercept it.
