DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Fifteen New People’s Army rebels stormed and burned early Thursday the equipment of fruit plantation Dole Philippines in Makilala town, a military official said.

Major Armand Rico, spokesperson of Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), said pursuing authorities on board vehicle ran over a landmine killing Councilor Ricky Apolinario of the village of San Vicente and wounding three policemen.

Army troops are conducting pursuit operations against the rebels.

Rico said extortion may have been the motive behind the attack.
