MANILA, Philippines?President Benigno Aquino III said Saturday he was not keen on having the justices of the Supreme Court impeached because the tribunal struck down as unconstitutional the Truth Commission that he created.
The commission, created by President Aquino?s Executive Order No. 1 and tasked to investigate alleged corruption by the Arroyo administration, was found unconstitutional for allegedly violating the equal protection provision of the Charter.
?We have six years to do what we have to do. The proceedings, according to the Supreme Court itself, run up to six years,? President Aquino told reporters in Tarlac where he addressed barangay (village) leaders in observance of barangay assembly day.
?If we are going to put intramurals such as an impeachment case, or attention or our focus will be diverted. There will be many lost opportunities,? he added.
Mr. Aquino earlier said that some of his allies in Congress had already raised the possibility of an impeachment case against justices of the Supreme Court.
?When this decision came out and it seemed that the (Truth Commission) was being blocked, some of our allies became upset and they appeared to be? losing confidence that something right would come out of these proceedings,? the President said Saturday, clarifying his earlier remarks.
President Aquino, nonetheless, made it clear that his priority remained bringing to closure ? ?how best to achieve the aim in the fastest time" ? to the scandals that weren?t resolved under the previous administration.
