Arroyo makes bold fashion statement

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines—Was she setting the tone for the new year with a “daring” fashion statement?

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo showed up for her first Cabinet meeting Tuesday at the Macaraeg-Macapagal ancestral house here in a pink, knitted off-shoulder blouse that revealed pink straps holding her tank top.

To complement the look, she wore tight pants and a black leather belt with a big silver buckle, a “bold” look that matched her positive mood at the start of the meeting.

The presidential outfit stood out in a roomful of casually-dressed Cabinet members that included Vice President Noli de Castro, the presidential adviser on Filipinos overseas, who came in a polo shirt and black Armani pants.

Not a few spectators noted what they called the “boldness” of Arroyo’s outfit.

“She’s dressed like a teenager,” one of them said of the 62-year-old President’s new look.

The Cabinet, however, tackled serious issues during the four-hour meeting.

“Topping the agenda was the resumption of peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, the country’s response to the global financial crisis.

With the full impact of the crisis expected to be felt in the country during the first quarter, Arroyo’s economic managers have remained largely optimistic, considering the relative stability of the domestic economy. Christian V. Esguerra
