MANILA, Philippines—The government should reduce power generation and transmission costs if it really wants to lower electricity rates in the country, the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex) has said.
The group said in a statement that instead of picking on the Manila Electric Co., the government should come up with better policies to address problems in power generation and transmission, which constitute over 70 percent of the cost of electricity in the country.
“The focus on Meralco as the main cause of high power costs is clearly diversionary. It underscores the failure of the government to genuinely address the real cause of and true solution to our power cost difficulties,” the group said.
