MANILA, Philippines -- On the eve of International Women's Day,
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo launched two projects that would help women tap science and technology and give them more opportunities for microfinance.
The President also said that the government would work to reduce the maternal mortality ratio by increasing access of pregnant women to health services and promotion of natural family planning methods.
"Today, we launch HATAW or Harnessing Appropriate Technology to Assist Women and POWER and Projects for Women Entrepreneurs," Arroyo said in a speech at the Malacañang Heroes Hall.
The President said HATAW would "seek technology-based solutions to
community-based problems" and would "mesh local knowledge system with modern technology."
"HATAW is for bold, innovative and inventive women who will see the development through the prism of science," she said.
The President cited the example of food production, which could be boosted through HATAW, using biotechnology practices.
"If some women will tap safe biotechnology practices to boost food production, HATAW will nurture their plans," she said.
The project would be funded from the P340-million budget of the
Department of Science and Technology (DoST) for technology innovation and commercialization.
"As to the POWER program, this will be for women entrepreneurs who need additional capital infusion. Those who need bridge financing?
Don't worry, girl, POWER will power up your dreams," the President said.
The President said women could tap POWER to start up Botika ng
Barangay (Village Pharmacy) or Tindahan Natin (Our Store) in the villages.
