MANILA, Philippines -- Manila residents can expect a brighter city in the New Year.
Mayor Alfredo Lim has instructed city engineer Arman Andres to speed up the installation of additional lamp posts and rehabilitation of the old ones to beautify Manila and help in his crime-prevention drive.
At present, street lights in the city have a wattage of only 75 and this will be increased to 200 to provide greater illumination in the streets and, hopefully, discourage the criminally inclined.
The mayor said he has negotiated with the Manila Electric Company for the developmental changes for the benefit of city residents.
He explained that lighting up the city will not only prevent crimes but will also promote well-being among Manilans which could be translated to a happier disposition for everyone and better chances for businesses to prosper.
In a related development, Lim has also expressed his desire to see government buildings and other iconic edifices and landmarks in the city lit up with decorative lights to promote the spirit of Christmas this December.
