MANILA, Philippines – A British citizen Wednesday sought the help of police after a former congressman allegedly threatened to kill him two weeks ago.
In his complaint, George Chowrimootoo, 56, said he met former Marikina Rep. Romeo Candazo in a restaurant on the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City on June 30.
The complainant, who said he owns a recruitment agency, said he discussed a business proposal to deploy caregivers to London with Candazo, who operates a caregiver school in Marikina City.
Chowrimootoo said he was surprised when Candazo took out a gun, emptied its magazine of bullets in front of him and then threatened to kill him.
Candazo also showed him on his laptop computer pictures of people he supposedly had ordered killed, the Briton added.
Chowrimootoo, however, refused to say what had prompted Candazo to threaten his life.
SPO2 Jun Mortel, case investigator, said Chowrimootoo told them he decided to go to the police after he talked to a lawyer who advised him to file a case against the former lawmaker.
Reached for comment, Candazo strongly denied the Briton’s allegations, saying the police should have arrested Chowrimootoo who, he claimed, was a known illegal recruiter in London.
“That man is facing several cases in London. He came here to continue his illicit activity, so he must be arrested,” he said in a phone interview.
Candazo claimed the British Embassy is preparing charges against Chowrimootoo, whom he said is a con artist who had been falsely representing a London-based recruitment firm.
