Stormy weekend in parts of Luzon; Metro Manila under Signal No. 1

It will be a stormy weekend in some parts of Luzon due to severe tropical storm “Karen” (international name: Sakira), which is expected to strengthen into a typhoon before making a landfall.

Catanduanes, Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte were placed under Signal No. 2.

Signal No. 1 was placed over Metro Manila, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon including Polillo Island, Aurora, Isabela, Quirino, Laguna, Rizal, Marinduque, Tical and Burias Island, Masbate, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, Batangas and Northern Samar.

“Karen” is expected to make landfall over Quezon-Aurora early Sunday before it crosses Central Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said on Friday.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday noon.

The storm was last located 205 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 140 kph.

It was moving slowly west northwest at 9 kph.

Fishermen were also advised to avoid the eastern seaboard of Eastern Samar. RAM/rga
