Attempted bombing in Sulu foiled

/ 09:52 AM October 06, 2015

Members of the Philippine Marines foiled a possible bombing attack by suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels in Sulu on Monday night, the military said.

Two men in a motorcycle appeared to have a mechanical trouble some 20 meters from a checkpoint on the airport road in Barangay (village) San Raymundo in Jolo and left a bunch of lanzones at around 7:30p.m., said Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Group Sulu.

When the motorcycle passed the checkpoint, the Philippine Marines on duty checked out the lanzones.

It was observed that the lanzones had electrical wire, and K9 and Explosive Ordnance Teams were called, Arrojado said.

The improvised explosive device was later disrupted by the responding teams. It was made up of 60-millimeter ammunitions, three 9-volt batteries, a plastic box and a cellphone, which was a triggering device.

Arrojado said the suspects are “most likely” members of the Abu Sayyaf and were possibly targeting the military camp nearby. IDL
