Northeast monsoon to continue bringing isolated rain

MANILA, Philippines — No tropical cyclone is expected in the country this week, but cold winds from the northeast will bring cloudy skies and isolated light rains to Luzon and the Visayas, state forecasters said.

According to the weekly weather outlook of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, the northeast monsoon will continue to prevail over most of Luzon and the Visayas.

“Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon,” Pagasa said.

Mindanao, on the other hand, will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, it added.

But the surge of the northeasterly surface wind flow will temporarily weaken Tuesday until Wednesday evening but regain strength over Northern Luzon on Thursday morning, bringing  partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains over the Cagayan Valley.

Likewise, Metro Manila, Bicol region, and the provinces of Aurora and Quezon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, Pagasa said.

“The rest of the country will have fair weather conditions aside from isolated afternoon rain showers or thunderstorm,” it said.

By Friday, the northeast monsoon, or “hanging amihan,” which ushers in cold winds from Siberia, will continue to prevail and most areas in the eastern sections of the archipelago will experience light rains.

“No tropical cyclone is expected throughout the outlook period,” Pagasa said.
