Today, November 18, is the 85th birth anniversary of former Vice President Salvador “Doy” Laurel.

Born in Paco, Manila, in 1928, Laurel served the country for more than 30 years as vice president, senator, assemblyman, secretary of foreign affairs and chair of the Philippine Centennial Commission.

The son of the late Jose P. Laurel, president of the Second Philippine Republic, Doy Laurel died of lymphoma on Jan. 28, 2004.

He was given full state honors and awarded the Order of Lakandula Rank of Bayani, one of the highest honors given by the country to an individual. Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
