Triathlete Jopson: Running can help fight diabetes

/ 06:31 AM February 24, 2013

FIGHTING diabetes through running and triathlon was the main discussion in the Cebu-edition of the “Lose Weight Get Active, Fight Diabetes” lecture event of the Philippine Diabetes Athletes and Team Triabetes yesterday at the activity center of the Ayala Center Cebu.

Multi-awarded triathlete and coach Noy Jopson spearheaded the lecture by sharing the fundamentals of running and its importance for everyone’s health. Guest speakers were Dr. Jeoffrey Arbatin, Dr. Raymund Bontol and Dr. Marian Denopol, who also discussed sports and health-related topics.

“Diabetes should not be a hindrance to have an active and healthy lifestyle, this should be fought through getting physically active and healthy. One way of doing it is through running and engaging in multi-sports like triathlon,” said Jopson.

Dr. Ress Bautista, one of the founding members of Triabetics, has had diabetes for 14 years. Jopson introduced him to running and triathlon to maintain a normal level of his blood sugar. He has been living healthy since then. He has inspired fellow diabetics to join and help spread the awareness of how to beat the diabetes through sports.

“So far we’ve joined seven triathlons and a lot of running events after we established the organization last 2011. I can testify that our health has improved and our blood sugar level has been normal,” said Bautista.
