Cuello, Meneses to fight Sept. 22
WBC Silver minimumweight champion Denver “The Excitement” Cuello will be facing Ivan Meneses of Puebla, Mexico on September 22 marking the fifth time that Cuello will be fighting on Mexican soil.
The 25 year-old Cuello (31W-4L-6D, 21 KOs) who hails from Iloilo, has a 3W-1L record on his Mexican sojourn. Two years ago he suffered an unfortunate third round disqualification loss to Juan Hernandez despite having downed Hernandez in the same round. He returned to Mexico last year and bounced back with stoppage victories against Sebastian Arcos (KO 3) and Carlos Perez (TKO 1). Last May, Cuello stopped Ganigan Lopez in two rounds in a WBC eliminator to officially acquire the top contender status. He continues to wait for his chance for a shot at a world title.
Meneses (18W-10L-1D, 10 KOs) won the vacant IBF Latino light flyweight title in his last fight against Luis Ceja. He has lost twice to the same Juan Hernandez who won by disqualification against Cuello.
Promoter Aljoe Jaro informed Cebu Daily News that they will leave on September 10 and proceed to Las Vegas for the September 15 fight between Mexican WBC light middleweight champion Saul Alvarez and Josesito Lopez before going to Mexico.
Jaro, who also supervises the training of his boxers, was tapped to assist in the corner of the Alvarez camp.
