LUCENA CITY, Quezon — Despite the onset of the rainy season, the local government of Infanta in Quezon province on Wednesday urged residents to continue taking precautions after the town’s heat index reached a dangerous 49 degrees Celsius.

In a public advisory posted on its Facebook page at around 2:35 p.m.the local government said the 49°C heat index was recorded at 2 p.m. by the Infanta Synoptic Station of the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Earlier, the locality logged 45°C at 11 a.m. and 12 noon.

“This level of heat falls under the Danger Level, which may cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat may lead to heat stroke,” the advisory, written in Filipino, stated.

The northern Quezon town also recorded a 44°C heat index on June 2, making it the only area in the Calabarzon region to register a dangerous heat index level, based on Pagasa data.

Infanta has experienced persistently high heat index levels in recent days, reaching 45°C on May 29 and 31, and 44°C on May 30 and June 1.

The heat index refers to the temperature felt by the human body when air temperature and humidity are combined.

The local government advised residents to drink plenty of water even if not thirsty, wear light and comfortable clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Residents were also advised to use umbrellas, hats, or other protective gear against extreme heat and to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

Last Saturday, Pagasa officially declared the onset of the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, which is expected to bring more frequent rains and thunderstorms across many parts of the country.
