PAF goes on aerial check of Homonhon Island grass fire in Eastern Samar

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Air Force conducted an aerial flight over Homonhon Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar to assess the extent of a grass fire that has been burning across the remote areas of the island.
Air Force helicopters from the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing and Tactical Operations Group 8 were deployed Tuesday to monitor the spread and behavior of the blaze, the Air Force said in a statement on Wednesday.
The operation was coordinated with the Office of Civil Defense and the Bureau of Fire Protection–Guiuan Fire Station, which are leading the ground movements.
Officials said the aerial check was intended to provide responders with a clearer picture of conditions on the ground as firefighting operations continue in the difficult terrain.
Additional helicopter sorties, including heli-bucket operations, are being prepared to help contain the fire, if needed.
According to an Inquirer report, local officials in Guiuan, Eastern Samar requested aerial support as firefighters and responders struggled to contain the blaze.
Fire has been burning since April 17 and it has affected an estimated 80 to 100 hectares of land across several barangays on the island, according to local disaster officials.
Response teams pointed to strong winds and rugged terrain as problems in containing the blaze.
Authorities have yet to determine what triggered the incident. /apl
