1 rescued as cargo truck overturns at San Juanico Bridge

TACLOBAN CITY — A cargo truck overturned on the San Juanico Bridge Friday night, Feb. 20, sending one of its helpers plunging into the sea and temporarily disrupting traffic along the vital Leyte-Samar link.
The overturned truck was finally removed from the bridge the following day, restoring the normal flow of vehicles.
The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. while the truck was crossing from the Samar side toward Tacloban City. The vehicle was driven by Ronnie Timogtimog, with helpers Francis Labro and Ronald Timogtimog onboard.
Initial investigation showed that the driver was momentarily blinded by the high-beam headlights of an oncoming vehicle. While attempting to avoid a possible collision with a motorcycle navigating the narrow passage, he swerved, causing the truck to overturn and slam into the bridge barricade.
San Juanico Bridge, currently under repair and maintenance, is operating on a one-lane alternating traffic scheme. Authorities have repeatedly reminded motorists to exercise caution, especially at night, due to limited maneuvering space, reduced visibility, and the presence of concrete barriers.
