MANILA, Philippines — Lawyer Melvin Matibag on Friday took his oath as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Executive Sec. Ralph Recto administered Matibag’s oath of office at Malacañang.

In a Facebook post, Matibag said he is “honored and humbled” to accept his appointment.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to President Bongbong Marcos for the trust and confidence,” Matibag said.

“I am committed to leading with nobility, bravery, and integrity strengthening our fight against crime, including cybercrime, and bringing the Bureau closer to the Filipino people,” he added.

On Thursday, Palace press officer Claire Castro announced Matibag’s appointment, replacing acting NBI Director Angelito Magno.

However, Castro did not provide a reason for the leadership change.

Matibag was former president Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet secretary and previously secretary general of Partido ng Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, or PDP-Laban. /gsg
