Fake HPG cop hurt in alleged encounter with law enforcers in Cavite

LUCENA CITY — A man masquerading as a policeman was accidentally shot and wounded on Wednesday, Jan. 8, in an alleged encounter with real law enforcers in General Trias City, Cavite.

The Region 4A police reported Thursday, that “Lawrence” had been under surveillance by personnel from the police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) for posing as one of their members while dressed in their uniform and extorting money from road users.

On Wednesday around 10:30 p.m., HPG members were about to accost Lawrence for his unauthorized wearing of HPG uniform and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) jacket in Barangay San Francisco, when the man resisted and punched Police Chief Master Sergeant Erlan Demate on his face.

Lawrence also grappled with Demate that resulted in the firing of the latter’s service firearm, hitting the former on his chest.

The fake cop was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
