Over 350 people stranded in Luzon ports – PCG

MANILA, Philippines —  A total of 354 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers were stranded in ports in Luzon on Wednesday morning due to the effects of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

According to PCG, the figure was monitored from midnight until 4 a.m.

“The PCG monitored 354 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers, 31 vessels, one motorbanca, and 34 rolling cargoes stranded while eight vessels and one motorbanca were taking shelter in Southern Tagalog and Bicol regions due to Carina,” its advisory read.

Of the 354 people, 209 are stranded in Southern Tagalog ports and 145 in Bicol ports.

Based on the state weather bureau’s latest cyclone update, Carina was last spotted 290 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

It was moving northwest at 25 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 155 kph and gusts of up to 190 kph.

Carina also enhanced the southwest monsoon, which is expected to bring moderate to intense rainfall in the western part of Luzon from Wednesday to Friday.
