Troopers train on rights, tactics

AT least 52 Army troopers learned combat techniques and human rights issues yesterday as part of the Infantry Non-Commission Basic Course of the Central Command in Central Visayas (Centcom-7).

The soldiers who came from military divisions in Panay, Negros Islands and Davao are undergoing the 16-week course described as a “combat maneuvering exercise” at the Centcom View Park in barangay Busay, Cebu City.

Maj. Mario Jose M. Chico, Centcom course director, said soldiers who served the army for at least five to 10 years are qualified to undergo the training.

“This training is in preparation for a higher position in the military,” he said.

The course covers first aid treatment, leadership skills, combat tactics, the Internal Peace and Security Plan (IPSP) Balikatan, adherence to human rights and securing involvement of community stakeholders.

“Human rights abuse is always a big issue during military encounters. We see to it that soldiers don’t violate human rights,” Chico told Cebu Daily News. The graduation will be held on June 6. Reporter Rhea Ruth V. Rosell
