Pagasa: Rains likely in some quake-hit Mindanao areas due to easterlies

MANILA, Philippines — Rain may occur in some quake-hit regions in Mindanao on Monday due to the easterlies, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In a public weather report, Pagasa specialist Benison Estareja said the easterlies are forecast to drench the Dinagat Islands and Surigao provinces.
Easterlies are warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean.
“Sa ating mga kababayan sa Mindanao, pinaka-uulanin ang Dinagat Islands and Surigao provinces dahil sa easterlies. May mga kalat-kalat na thunderstorms sa umaga pero mababawasan ito pagsapit ng hapon hanggang sa gabi,” he said.
(To our compatriots in Mindanao, the Dinagat Islands and Surigao provinces will experience rains due to the easterlies. There will be scattered thunderstorms in the morning, but these will decrease by afternoon until evening.)
Estareja also advised residents in the Caraga region to take caution against landslides, which rains and the effects of consecutive earthquakes on Sunday may trigger.
“We are reminding our fellow countrymen here in the Caraga region, who experienced yesterday’s earthquake, that the shaking that occurred could possibly trigger landslides,” the Pagasa weather specialist said in Filipino.
A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur province on Saturday night. A series of aftershocks ensued in the province and other areas of Mindanao.
For the rest of Mindanao, Estareja said the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Bangsamoro region may expect overcast skies with a high chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
It would also be a wet Monday in Eastern Visayas because of the easterlies.
“To our fellow countrymen here in the Eastern Visayas, especially in Northern Samar and Eastern Samar, please bring an umbrella when leaving your homes as there will be expected rains brought by the easterlies,” Estareja said in Filipino.
“Here in the western and central portions of Visayas, expect partly cloudy to occasionally sunny skies, accompanied by brief showers, especially in Aklan, Capiz, northern Iloilo, and northern Cebu. There is also a high chance of rain in the afternoon and evening,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, is forecast to continue bringing rains over Batanes and Cagayan provinces.
In a bulletin, Pagasa said the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley are likely to see cloudy skies with possibilities of light rains due to the northeast monsoon.
Metro Manila, on the other hand, may expect rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms.
The weather bureau did not issue a gale warning, but Estareja advised fishermen to expect moderate to rough seas along the seaboards of northern Luzon.
