2 suspected NPA rebels killed in Samar clash

TACLOBAN CITY – Two alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a gunfight with government forces in a remote village in Basey, Samar on Friday.

The two alleged communist rebels, whose identities have yet to be known, succumbed to gunshot wounds to the body.

The soldiers, belonging to the 63rd Infantry Brigade, were conducting a military operation in the area when they encountered about 17 suspected rebels.

The rebels left behind five firearms and ammunition.

Government troops in Eastern Visayas have been going after communist rebels for more than 50 years. They claimed to have dismantled two of the four remaining guerilla fronts of the NPA in the region.
