5.1 magnitude earthquake rocks Agusan del Norte

MANILA, Philippines  – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocked Agusan del Norte early Friday morning, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to state seismologists, the temblor occurred at 12:04 a.m. with an epicenter 6 kilometers southeast of the town of Santiago.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 13 kilometers, Phivolcs said in an updated bulletin.

The agency said the following intensities were felt in these areas:

  • Intensity IV or “moderately strong” vibrations – Santiago, Jabonga, and Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte

  • Intensity III or “weak” vibrations – Talacogon in Agusan del Sur

  • Intensity II or “slightly felt” vibrations  – Lanuza in Surigao del Sur

  • Intensity I or “scarcely perceptible vibrations – Guinsiliban in Camiguin

Instrumental intensities were likewise recorded in these areas:

  • Intensity IV – Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte

  • Intensity III – Surigao City in Surigao del Norte

  • Intensity I  – Takalag in Bukidnon; Abuyog, and Mahaplag in Leyte

State seismologists warned the public about damage and aftershocks following the earthquake.
