Fisherman dead, 3 others rescued as boat capsizes off Batanes

TUGUEGARAO CITY — A fisherman died on Thursday after their boat capsized in the waters off Dinem Island in Basco town, Batanes province, said the local coast guard.

The fatality was identified as Eduardo Alueta, who suffered a head injury.

The coast guard said they rescued Alueta’s three companions.

An initial investigation showed that strong waves around 7 a.m. hit and damaged the fishers’ boat.

The local coast guard deployed a vessel to respond to the distressed boat after learning about the incident from other fishermen.

Alueta’s body was recovered while his three companions were brought to the rural health unit for a medical examination.

Philippine Coast Guard provincial officer Cydney Sagario said no gale warning was issued on Thursday, prompting the fishermen to venture into the open sea. INQ
