Nine fisherfolk missing in Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines — Nine fisherfolk were reported missing in the province of Catanduanes, as the shear line and the northeast monsoon continued to bring rain over the Eastern Luzon, Visayas and parts of Mindanao.
According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) Virac Catanduanes in an advisory, four missing fisherfolk were reported missing since Saturday in Barangay Buenavista, Viga, Catanduanes.
The four were identified as Willy Ralf De Leon Uchi, 35 years old; Juanito Torregosa Estrella, 51 years old; Ringo Ogale Tupic, 37 years old; and Jobert Gianan Teaño, 33 years old.
The agency said that the four sailed to fish on a pink and blue motor banca, despite a gale warning raised in the seaboards of Luzon.
Meanwhile, MDRRMO Virac also reported five more missing fisherfolk the same day, three from Barangay Palnab Del Norte, and two from Barangay San Vicente.
Article continues after this advertisementMDRRMO Virac said that the first three reportedly sailed in the morning on a yellow maroon motor banca, while the other pair sailed on a yellow motor banca. Both groups of fisherfolk and boats have yet to return home since.
Article continues after this advertisementThe five missing fisherfolk were identified as Noel Zafe, 41 years old; Dante David, 41 years old; Arnel Araojo, 43 years old; Domingo Borilla Jr., 33 years old; and Jason Mandasoc, 31 years old.

Pagasa in its weather advisory on Sunday morning, warned fisherfolks nationwide of strong waves as most of the country’s seaboards were placed under a gale warning due to the strong northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan.”
