CQCU claims first men’s open title of Aboitiz Football Cup
CEBU Queen City United (CQCU) clinched for the first time the men’s open title of the 14th Aboitiz Cup, which came to an end yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
CQCU also has another reason to celebrate the weekend as it also finished third in the first round of the United Football League Second Division Tournament.
In the Aboitiz Cup, CQCU edged CrazyHorse, 2-1, to earn the right to represent Cebu in the Visayas eliminations of the Smart Club Championships.

CrazyHorse was able to equalize the game three minutes before halftime when Bernard Rotich found the back of the net through a pass from former Azkal member Joshua Fegidero.
CQCU showed its hunger for the title after it took the upperhand just three minutes into the second half on a goal by the team’s top scorer Dan Marnel Villarico.
Article continues after this advertisementFinishing third was Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), which prevailed in a penalty shootout, 4-2, over University of San Jose Recoletos Alumni. The regulation match ended 1-all.
Article continues after this advertisementIn the UFL, CQCU ended the first round with 25 points after posting a record of 8-1-2 (win-draw-loss).
The only Cebuano team in the UFL capped its first round stint with a win over Lions Meltique FC, 4-1. Scorers were Dan Marnel Villarico, Adlai Rivera, Rommel Cuizon and Ariel Cahilig. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
