Quezon town on Alabat Island suspends classes due to flooding

Severe flooding caused by heavy rains has prompted officials of the town of Quezon on Alabat Island in Quezon province to suspend classes

LUCENA CITY — Severe flooding caused by heavy rains has prompted officials of the town of Quezon on Alabat Island in Quezon province to suspend classes at all levels on Friday, October 14.

The municipal disaster risk reduction management council, in an announcement on Facebook early on Friday, said many parts of the locality located on the southern part of the island were affected by the floods spawned by Tropical Depression Neneng.

Quezon town is one of the three towns on Alabat Island, located between the Pacific Ocean and Lamon Bay. Aside from Quezon, the island also hosts the municipalities of Alabat and Perez.

Authorities in the two towns did not declare a suspension of classes.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its 5 a.m. bulletin on Friday, said Neneng was last located 1,015 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Pagasa has yet to hoist tropical wind signals along Neneng’s path.

The Department of Education Order No. 37 series of 2022 said classes and work in schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Alternative Learning System are canceled automatically when there is a typhoon signal, an orange or red rainfall warning, or a flood warning in any locality. INQ
