MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City Regional Trial Court has rescheduled the arraignment of Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, who shot and killed former Lamitan, Basilan mayor Rose Furigay, and wounded two others at Ateneo.

The Furigay family’s attorney, Atty. Quirino Esguerra, said that next month Yumol would get another mental evaluation. The arraignment has been reset for November 11.

Yumol’s arraignment has been reset twice. In August, the court rescheduled the arraignment for September 16 after it granted the request of Yumol’s lawyer to have him undergo a mental health check.

Esguerra explained that the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) doctors conducted a mental examination in August, then this month, and another on October 4.

“They will have 30 days to process their report, and they will submit it to the court,” Esguerra said over the phone.

The incident happened on July 24, 2022, at the grounds of Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. What was supposed to be a graduation ceremony turned out to become a crime scene after Yumol shot to death Furigay, her aide Victor Capistrano and injured Furigay’s graduating daughter Hannah Rose.

At that exact moment, the vehicle onboard Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo arrived. Upon seeing the incident, his close-in responded and exchanged gunfire with Yumol forcing him to flee on foot.

Ateneo guard Jeneven Bandiala tried to stop Yumol, but he was also shot and killed.

Yumol managed to go out of the campus. He boarded a bus. The police caught him at the nearest bus stop.
