DOH records 82,597 dengue cases, 106% higher than last year

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday said it has already recorded 82,597 cases of dengue as of July 16, which is 106 percent higher than the cases reported the previous year.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday said it has already recorded 82,597 cases of dengue as of July 16, which is 106 percent higher than the cases reported the previous year.

According to DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire in a media briefing, most of these cases were reported from Central Luzon, Central Visayas and Metro Manila:

  • Central Luzon – 13,449 or 16 percent of total
  • Central Visayas – 8,905 or 11 percent
  • Metro Manila – 6,884 or 8 percent

Meanwhile, 20,261 cases were recorded in the latest four-week period from June 19 to July 16, said Vergeire.

The regions that recorded the most cases in this time period were the following:

  • Central Luzon – 4,629
  • Cagayan Valley – 2,151
  • Metro Manila – 1,985

Vergeire also said that 10 out of the 17 regions exceeded the endemic threshold in these four weeks, with regions Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa and Cordillera Administrative Region all showing a sustained increasing trend.

A total of 319 deaths have also been reported nationwide, said Vergeire, which translates to a case fatality rate of 0.4 percent.
