CEBU CITY —  The Department of Health in Central Visayas announced on Tuesday that the region remains “monkeypox-free” after two suspected cases turned out negative of the disease.

Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, head of the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit in Central Visayas (RESU-7), said there were two suspected monkeypox cases in Bohol and in Cebu provinces but test results showed they were negative.

Last week, a patient was suspected to be infected with monkeypox inside a hospital in Cebu. Cañal said that sample was taken from the patient and brought to a local Integrated Public Health Laboratory in Cebu City for testing.

Meanwhile, weeks ago, a barangay (village) health worker reported a suspected monkeypox infection from a patient in a local government in Bohol.

“(All) the tests came back negative. So far we do not have monkeypox in Central Visayas,” Cañal said.
