ILOILO CITY — Returning City Councilor Plaridel Nava used his inaugural speech on Tuesday to express support for Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and his allies in the local legislature.

Nava, the lone winner from the opposition in last May’s city council race, remarked that the most recent election was the toughest, citing the machinery of the Treñas administration and his allies.

“I have experienced a lot of battles in my life, but not the kind of battle that I have encountered in the last election. All kinds of cannons were fired against me. I have fought the entire machinery that is rich with resources. I fought the entire city hall. But with God’s grace, I survived such a battle, and we won the war,” he said in his inaugural speech during the new council’s first session on Tuesday.

“We almost won the battle against the illegal drugs in the city. We won the fight against the previous power distribution utility all because of our efforts to protect the interest and welfare of our people. Almost always I stood my ground, I fought for the people – not for my personal interest, not for a personal selfish agenda but for the welfare of the people,” he added.
